How to Choose the Right Wine

Have you ever arrived a restaurant, taken a quick glance at the wine menu, and immediately felt overwhelmed? It’s happened to most of us at some time in our lives, but the process of selecting a delicious wine doesn’t have to be difficult!

At State & Allen, we offer an extensive selection of red, white, and sparkling wines, but we also take great pride in carefully selecting the wines that make the cut. Whether you’re an avid wine drinker or partake occasionally, here are a few tips on how to choose the right wine at a restaurant:

1. Order a Bottle vs. Glass of Wine

Unless there are particular wine specials going on, try to avoid ordering wine by the glass. If you’re dining with friends who would enjoy a similar type of wine, you are better off ordering a bottle vs. each of you ordering a glass. Why? Ordering by the bottle offers more selection, opens you up to more premium wines, and often there is a markup on ordering by the glass vs. bottle.

2. Don’t Jump to a Red

Many people love the rich, deep flavors of red wine (we certainly do!), but beware of starting off with something too heavy. Heavier red wines – like a Cabernet Sauvignon – can actually steal your appetite before the entrée ever arrives. Instead, start with something lighter, like a Rosé or Sauvignon Blanc, before jumping to a red later in the meal.

3. Consider the Food

What are you ordering? A fish with a lemon butter sauce is better suited for white wine than a red. Likewise, you aren’t going to want to enjoy your chicken fried steak with a Pinot Grigio. Before ordering your wine at restaurants in Dallas, review the menu and then consider what compliments the flavors of the food.

4. Ask for Help

Have questions? We’ve got answers! Most restaurants in Dallas would love to help you select the right wine! They want you to enjoy your meal. No one is going to think less of you should you ask for some expert advice before ordering. Ask your server what pairs well with your meal or for clarification on any tasting notes listed.

5. Go with Your Gut

Sometimes the best wine is the one you like – period. Don’t overthink the wine selection process! If there is a type of wine you enjoy, go with it! Maybe it isn’t the best pairing for your meal or not the most refined option, but it really doesn’t matter. The only person who needs to enjoy the wine is you so go with your gut.

At State & Allen, it’s hard to go wrong with our carefully selected wine list. Come see us this week to enjoy a glass or two with us!
